The formulas are the industry standards: volumetric weight (kg) = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ divisor × Qty with divisor 6000 for standard air cargo and 5000 for express courier; chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric); and airlines round the chargeable weight up to the next 0.5 kg before applying the rate. Worked example

A carton of readymade garments measures 60 × 40 × 30 cm and weighs 5 kg. Volumetric weight = (60 × 40 × 30) ÷ 6000 = 12 kg. Actual weight = 5 kg. Chargeable weight = 12 kg — the airline bills 12 kg, not 5 kg, because the carton occupies more space than its weight suggests. With 50 such cartons the shipment bills at 600 kg even though the scale reads only 250 kg.

My factory packing list is in millimetres. Can I use it directly?

Yes. Switch the unit selector to MM and enter the dimensions exactly as printed on the factory packing list - the calculator converts millimetres to centimetres automatically (500 mm = 50 cm). Entering millimetre values while in centimetre mode would inflate the volumetric weight a thousandfold, so always match the unit mode to your paperwork.

What is the courier oversize limit for air shipments?

Express couriers like DHL, FedEx and UPS apply an oversize surcharge when any single dimension of a package exceeds 274 cm (about 108 inches). The calculator warns you when a carton crosses this limit; such cargo is usually cheaper via forwarder air cargo on the 1:6000 divisor than via courier. Always confirm the current limit and surcharge with your carrier.
